Adkins was born to a young single mother in various working-class neighbourhoods of London. She was a lover of contemporary pop songs as a child and was able to play the guitar and clarinet. It wasn't until her teens that she was exposed to Etta James, a blues and rhythm singerand other musicians of the mid-20th century, that she started to think about a career in music. While she honed her talents in a state-funded secondary school for the performing arts an acquaintance began uploading songs Adkins had written and recorded on the social networking site Myspace. Her music soon caught the attention of record labels and in 2006, several months after graduating she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
